Lohri ki Thaali / Sankranti ki Thaali



Lohri is a Punjabi folk festival, which falls in the month of January. Lohri is celebrated to mark the end of peak winter and is traditionally a harvest festival. It is time to harvest sugar cane, peanuts, radish , mustard .

A bonfire is lit. Lighting of the fire has been common in winter solstice festivals throughout the world. Women go around the fire singing Sunder Mundriye ho , which is associated with a Punjabi folk tale. They pop sesame seeds , popcorn, jaggery and rewaris , ( these are mini sesame chikki a, just like some buttons ).

It is traditional to eat Makki di Roti with Sarso da Saag, sweets made from jaggery and sesame seeds. In the north this festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm. I know of friends who celebrate and party on this festival, specially if it's a brides first Lohri or a baby's first Lohri.

The Sindhis too celebrate this festival and call it Lal Lohi or even Tira Moori. Tir is sesame and Moori is radish. It is a traditional to eat these two things first thing in the morning. We send sesame seed ladoos , chikkis , gajak, peanut chikkis to our daughters.

Here I have prepared a spread which is prepared traditionally on Lohri. I have posted some of the recipes , but there are some which shall be posted later. This is my post for Day 2 , Week 1 of BM #74.

Snack
Gobhi ke Pakore
( cauliflower florets spiced and dipped into gram flor batter , fried to a crispy golden munch )


Main Course
Sarso da Saag
( mustard greens and spinach cooked in onion tomato gravy with fresh green garlic, laced with pure ghee)


Pindi Chole
( chickpeas made with tangy spices )


Bread

Makki ki Roti
( flat bread made with freshly ground corn , jazzed up with grated radish , radish leaves, coriander leaves and green chillies )


Accompaniments
( dumplings made with Urad daal and dunked into creamy yogurt, spiced with yellow chilly and roasted cumin powder )


Salad
( onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, radish and green chillies )


Sweets

( a unique Halwa made with Sooji and jaggery )


( a Halwa made with the Delhi red carrots )


Rice puffs rolled with jaggery  into balls )



Aate ke Ladoo
( roasted wheat flour and almonds laced with ghee and edible gum, these Ladoos are a total treat )


( sesame seed and jaggery brittle with a hint of cardamons)


( roasted peanuts and jaggery brittle )

    1. Thank you Sharmila . For this spread the chikki , gajjar ka halwa and ladoos were made a couple of days before , cooking rest of the meal wasn't a task .
